Hartwell Top Ten Centers of Biomedical Research

Each year, The Hartwell Foundation announces its Top Ten Centers of Biomedical Research in the United States. Selected institutions are invited to nominate individuals to compete for Hartwell Individual Biomedical Research Awards for early-stage, innovative, and cutting-edge biomedical research with the potential to benefit children in the U.S. (the "Competition"). Designated Top 10 institutions may submit up to three nominations. From time-to-time, the Foundation may also select an institution for limited participation, which may submit up to two nominations.

From all the Nominees submitted in each Competition, the Foundation selects ten individuals to receive a Biomedical Research Award, which provides funding for three years at $100,000 direct cost per year. In addition, for each funded Nominee the participating sponsoring institution receives a Hartwell Biomedical Research Fellowship to fund one postdoctoral candidate who exemplifies the values of the Foundation. Hartwell Fellowships provide support for two years at $50,000 direct cost per year.

Participating institutions are chosen by The Hartwell Foundation in a closed selection process that considers the shared values the institution has with the Foundation relating to children's health, while also considering the presence of a medical school, biomedical engineering, and the quality and scope of ongoing research. Selection of an institution for participation in any given year does not guarantee selection in a subsequent year. Only researchers nominated by a participating institution selected by The Hartwell Foundation are eligible to compete for the Individual Biomedical Research Award. All Nominees for the Award must hold U.S. citizenship. Awards are announced annually in April.
