Participating institutions are asked to complete internal competitions one month earlier to select nominees for a Hartwell Individual Biomedical Research Award. As part of the evaluation process, the Foundation will invite a limited number of Nominees for a personal, closed interview at the Foundation offices in Memphis, TN.  Nominees will be selected for interviews based upon the compelling nature of their research proposal describing innovative, early-stage, cutting-edge biomedical research with the potential to benefit children of the United States. Each Nominee will make a concise presentation describing their proposed research. Interview expenses are paid by the Foundation: travel is arranged by the Awardee and lodging is arranged by the Foundation.

In previous years, all Nominees from all participating institutions were interviewed on site, at their location.
