Early Childhood Education for Preschool Children

Jonestown, MS July 5, 2011 -- The Hartwell Foundation awarded a three-year grant providing $25,000 in funding for 2011, 2012 and 2013 to the Jonestown Family Center for Education and Wellness for early childhood education for the preschool children of Jonestown, Mississippi. The Center is located in one of the poorest areas of the United States. Sister Teresa of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary started the early childhood program in 1984. It is a Montessori School to educate children age 1 through kindergarten and to prepare them for first grade. The school has a significant track record with a number of children doing exceptionally well in elementary, middle and high school and a number of students going on to complete their college degree, including becoming nurses and doctors.
