Dean J. Aguiar, Ph.D.

Program Director

Dean Aguiar is a biochemist and molecular biologist with over 10 years industrial experience in the development of pharmaceuticals and medical device combination products.  As Program Director of The Hartwell Foundation, he is responsible for tactical management of scientific operations related to the primary mission; supporting and extending the funding process for biomedical research, including communicating the Foundation's scientific vision through interaction with researchers and institutional leadership. He offers encouragement and advice to researchers on project management and provides guidance on formulating development plans and clinical translation to meet regulatory scrutiny. Prior to joining The Hartwell Foundation, Dr. Aguiar held several leadership roles in biomedical R&D, including:  Director of Product Development at Biomimetic Therapeutics for Biotherapeutics and Regenerative medicine, as well as new target and biomarker identification and validation; Scientific Expert at Pfizer, Inc. for in-licensing opportunities and due diligence for the Inflammation Portfolio; and Project Leader in Genomics and Biotechnology at Pharmacia, Inc.  He completed undergraduate studies at Beloit College and earned his doctoral degree in Biochemistry at Rush University at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, followed by post-doctoral fellowships in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and The Stem Cell Institute at the University of Minnesota.  Dr. Aguiar has significantly contributed to both Investigational New Drug (IND) and Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) applications with the FDA, authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and has 1 patent from collaboration between Pfizer, Inc. and Isto Technologies, and 2 patents pending with the USTPO. Dean resides in Nashville, TN and is married with three boys.
